Segment sealing ring
The segment sealing ring is a sealing element consisting of a large number of segments surrounded by a spring. The number of segments depends on the shaft diameter, which can be as big as 2000 mm. When the device is operating, the working fluid acts evenly over the external diameter of the ring, and thus the spring is used only for supporting the segment assembly until sufficient working fluid pressure is reached.
The required number of rings depends on the working pressure. For sealing high-pressure devices, a set of segment sealing rings is used. The number of ring segments depends on the shaft diameter. When the number of segments is increased, a more even pressure is achieved. We recommend three-segment rings for shafts of up to 2000 mm in diameter, and six-segment rings for larger diameters.
Advantages:
- exceptional sealing efficiency even at small axial lengths
- it is possible to offset axial and radial shaft deviations at no cost to sealing efficiency.
- the segment sealing rings are characterized by simple installation and maintenance, in addition to being easily replaceable
Application:
- for steam turbines
- for water turbines
- for compressors
- for fans
Operating conditions:
- pressure: 80 bars
- temperature: 500oC
- speed: 50m/s
Material:
- carbographite – the quality depends on operating conditions
- alloyed teflon - the quality depends on operating conditions
Segment sealing rings are used for sealing under axial pitching of the compressor piston rod with a dry working fluid. Teflon is the most common material used for manufacturing axial sealing rings. The type of design and material quality are selected as per operating conditions.
